Here’s Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work

Would you like to know the real reason why New Year’s Resolutions don’t work? The number one problem is we write down 47 goals we are going to start accomplishing on Jan1st. Why all of a sudden is everything going to change on Jan1st? That’s crazy!… plus it’s not going to happen.

Here is the exact process I have been doing for the last few years.

The first thing you should do is write a vision of exactly what you want 2017 to look like. A vision is a picture. Clarity is power. Make that vision as detailed as possible.

The next big reason why New Year’s Resolutions don’t work is that you have no reason why you’re doing what doing. You have no Purpose or WHY. Let’s change that now. Look at your vision and write down three reasons why you want this vision to happen. Make sure these are your real why. They should make you a little emotional.

Now here is the biggest reason why New Year’s Resolutions don’t work.

You should only have three goals. Yes, I said three and no more. There is something called channel capacity which is scientifically advanced research that says your mind can only hold three things at a time. You can only focus on one thing, but you can keep three things at one time in your mind. That’s why Tony Robbins always says one, two, three overwhelm. You reach overwhelm with more than three.

So Identify the three biggest Outcome Goals that will create the vision for 2017. These three outcome goals are what will paint the picture of your year. These are the results or as some people call them product goals.

Now identify the process goals for each outcome goal. These are daily actions, outcomes or at the most weekly actions that when you execute your results will be achieved. The best way to identify the real needle movers is to write down every action you can think of and then identify the top three.

These three process goals need to be blocked into your calendar for the 12 months and protected like they are a dentist or a doctor’s appointment. If you erase it, you must replace it. You need to be a finisher.

Here is what I consider the thing that will make everything work:

Create three 12 week goals that will move you towards your One Year goals. Make sure that the process goals you identified earlier will achieve your 12-week outcome goals. Then focus on those process goals every day as your life depended on it and you will achieve your outcome goals as a by-product of that execution.

Execution and consistency are the keys to success!

Here’s one last point to really fine tune your plan. Write a 12 Week vision and identify three reasons why you want that 12-week vision.
